The town of artists has everything in plain sight, though it is the framing of a selected scene that adds value and discernment. Peploe mainly chose to capture views that balanced the Tollbooth architecture with that of those around it and this study follows this inclination but adds the merit of colour to separate, distinguish and reveal the separate stones therein. The Tollbooth is the mark of law of former times and a weather vane of customs obscure, obsolete and obviously uncaring, that as the present feature atop the central spire in former times, was directed in all angles of the compass.
It is a later revelation that stones taken to build the tollbooth were removed from Dundrennan Abbey where Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland.
