It is only a 1 Euro fare by bus to Collioure from Port-Vendres. Collioure is a popular tourist destination and the bus is quite full. I alight at what seems the obvious stop and make my way down to the shore. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret adored Collioure, though it did not provide suitable accommodation which they found more readily in nearby Port-Vendres. The ‘Summer Palace of the Queens of Aragon’, as Mackintosh described the building in one of his watercolours, is charged with a sense of history and romance. Its exact story line is complex and open to interpretation. It seems more natural, however, to dwell on imagination and speculation than dissect the official historical account. Matisse and his wife and André Derain were visitors to Collioure in 1905.
