The colours of the castle are made indeterminate, in transition from one to another, to tease the eye and conjure up a craft of hues which echo but seek no repetition. The trees still carry foliage, but approaching storms a long way distant will contrive to strip them bare and change the appearance of the season. And slowly, hour by hour, a small fraction of the rain that fell on hill and dale, meadow and forest is returned in grudging measure to the sea.
